In the crowded race to succeed the late Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, Steve Garvey stands out both for his celebrity and for how little he has actually campaigned. At community forums, the former baseball star turned pitchman has been a serial no-show. The 75-year-old Republican, a political novice, has raised only a sliver of the tens of millions of dollars needed to win a statewide race in California. Yet with only two weeks left until the March 5 primary, Mr. Garvey stands to win one of two November runoff spots despite facing three experienced Democratic members of Congress and a host of other contenders. While Representative Adam Schiff has widened his overall lead, polls suggest that Mr. Garvey could beat Representative Katie Porter for second place in California’s unusual “jungle” primary.

Just 1 in 3 voters are confident in Joe Biden's physical and mental faculties, per a new poll. But Biden's support overall is roughly the same as it was in 2020. AdvertisementA new poll from Monmouth University shows that just 1 in 3 voters are confident in President Joe Biden's physical and mental faculties, though support for the 2024 presidential candidate is around the same as from 2020. Conducted between February 8 to 12 with 902 US adults, the poll found that 32% of respondents felt confident in the 81-year-old Biden's "mental & physical stamina." Despite the waning public confidence in Biden's mental and physical strength, the poll found that support for the Democratic candidate remains about the same as in 2020 when he first faced off against Trump for president.

Defeated DeSantis Bows to Trump in GOP Primary

Ron DeSantis was the conservative policy wunderkind considered the GOP's solution for reuniting the Republican Party in a post-Trump world. The announcement came just two days before the Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire , with DeSantis polling in the single digits in the Granite State. Yet, like all of Trump’s other presidential primary challengers, DeSantis had difficulty escaping Trump’s penumbra and failed to dent the support of his MAGA movement. He consistently polled some 40% to 50% behind Trump among likely Republican primary voters, despite his campaign and supporting political action committees raising more than $100 million to break through. Indeed, DeSantis placed a distant second in the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 15, nabbing just 21% of the votes compared with 51% for Trump.

Nonetheless, it was notable at Sunday's rally in New Hampshire to see Trump praise DeSantis without calling him “DeSantimonious” or “DeSanctus,” putting an end to perhaps the most bitter rivalry of Republicans' 2024 campaign. “It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” DeSantis said, offering matter-of-fact analysis through a forced smile without adding plaudits for Trump. At first blush, it seemed to many to be the key to picking former President Donald Trump's lock on the Hawkeye State's Republican base. The alternative vote split roughly in two, leaving Republican Iowa firmly in Trump's hands as the first ballots of the 2024 presidential contest were cast. Trump does not thrive among suburban voters, a group that cost Trump nationally in 2020 and where Haley showed promise Monday. Haley, by contrast, beat Trump in Johnson County, Iowa, a burgeoning tract of homes and businesses along Interstate 80 south of Cedar Rapids. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. In Ohio, Jordan is a hometown boy whose Ohio State University wrestling coach title, conservative policies and never-say-die persona on Capitol Hill have earned him more devotion than he's currently receiving in Congress. On the debate stage last month, Mr. DeSantis declined to raise his hand when a moderator asked the Republican candidates if they thought human behavior was causing climate change. His campaign and the governor’s office did not respond to requests for comment about his views. Instead, Mr. DeSantis has seemingly reverted to an old Republican Party line that climate change is happening naturally, without being accelerated by human behavior like the burning of fossil fuels. Mr. DeSantis says he is simply being realistic about the country’s economic and national security needs. As the governor of a traditionally purple state on the front lines of climate change, Mr. DeSantis has been confronted with clear evidence that the environment is changing.

In seeking the rematch with James in the suburban district north of Detroit, Marlinga is hoping to extend his party's recent winning streak in Michigan. A former Macomb County judge and prosecutor, Marlinga beat out four other Democrats last year to win the party's nomination. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the campaign arm of House Democrats, has said the district is one of 31 GOP-held seats they will “aggressively target” in 2024. Last year, Democrats swept statewide races, flipped the state House and Senate and won three of four U.S. House races that were expected to be competitive. James lost U.S. Senate races in 2018 and 2020 before narrowly winning the House race while holding significant advantages in name recognition and fundraising.

Opinion | Nikki Haley Is the Best Trump Alternative

She was the candidate brave enough to state the obvious truth that Trump took decades of G.O.P. The other candidates assumed the usual conservative postures about cutting taxes and spending, but she introduced the reality: Under Trump, the G.O.P. She seems to be one of the few candidates who understands that to run against Trump you have to run against Trump. Haley, by contrast, seems to believe that voters are intelligent enough to be treated as adults. But if any of my friends and acquaintances want to stop Trump, this is their moment to give Haley her chance.

Mr. Chidi, concluding that something odd was taking place on the other side of the door, turned the knob and stepped into history. What he saw, and simultaneously live-streamed from his phone, were six to 10 people who reacted with alarm to his presence. As the source, an 18-year-old Republican activist named CJ Pearson, bustled wordlessly out of the room, Mr. Chidi asked what was going on. Mr. Chidi was soon escorted out of the meeting, but once in the corridor he asked who had reserved the room. Eventually, a clerk informed him that it was the House speaker, David Ralston, a Republican, who had done so at the behest of one of President Donald J. Trump’s lawyers, Ray Smith.
